How to Make a Good Impression on Your Clients When Meeting Them in Person

By Christy Tanner

When you are meeting one of your customers in person, you will want to make a good impression (unless you are trying to lose your job with them that is). When trying to make a good impression you will want to focus on your personal image and how you will come off to your client. The impression that the customer will leave the meeting with will be made up of the follow factors : the way that you dress, your body language, and your attitude.

You will want to ask yourself how conservative your clothes need to be for each particular customer. I always wear professional attire when I am meeting with a client. Unless there is some information that you have gotten from the customer that makes you believe that he is against professional clothing, I would say to go with a professional appearance. In other words, wear a suit if you’re a guy, and choose a conservative color as your choice, such as dark gray or black. If you are a woman, then you should wear a conservative colored business suit as well. You can wear a suit skirt or slacks, as both are just as dressed up as the other. Make sure you wear a white shirt, female or male, and your tie (for a male) should be something that is a plain color (no neon please) without a pattern.

Here are some more hints on what is considered professional attire:

Your Pirate Costume Freaks People Out Stop wearing them to meetings

Your pirate costume freaks people out so kindly don’t wear it to your client’s meeting.

Don’t wear anything with large or bold prints, or that have glitter and shine, or even trim. This includes shoes, accessories, and clothing.

Don’t wear sandals, white shocks, fishnets, shoes that need to be shined, tennis shoes, gaudy looking makeup, too much jewelry, and skirts that are not knee length.

No tight clothes or overly revealing clothes. You don’t want to give the wrong idea.

Do not wear more than one earring in each ear; only wear two rings per hand.

Make sure that your colors coordinate and match.

Don’t put on heavy perfume or cologne as your client might be allergic or just offended.

Your body language is watched by others, and it will convey a lot about you and how you feel. Be aware of that language and try to show that you are happy and confident, not fearful or nervous. Your clients will watch closely to figure out your body language so that they can respond in the correct manner as well.

Here are some tips on how to make sure that your body language is conveying the correct message to your customer:

Don't Do This

Yeh, You might Not Want to Put Your Feet up On the Table, Especially with Low Skirt.

When greeting your client, make sure that your handshake is firm, and your posture is good, and you have a smile.

When sitting make sure your back is straight, but not too rigid, have your arms and legs relaxed, but don’t keep your feet spread apart too far. Perhaps you should lead forward occasionally to show interest.

Make sure that you keep hand gestures to a minimum.

Keep eye contact with your client, but look away once in a while so you don’t seem to be staring.

Smile once in a while to show friendliness.

Verbal language also helps in your impression, by what you say and how you say it. Below are some tips for giving a good verbal impression.

Don't Talk with Your Mouth Full
Remember Not to Talk with Your Mouth Full (Again)

Know your answers, but don’t have them memorized. This will make you feel confident.

Don’t say “you know,” or “um” too much. If you’re not sure what to say relax and think than talk.

Always use proper English, don’t use slang for anything.

When you are asked a question, pause and make sure you know what is being asked. If you don’t know for sure ask again.

Being positive when you answer questions about yourself, but don’t talk too much.

If there is silence, don’t feel like you need to talk for no reason.

Remember that making a good impression on a client is your way to more work. If you get more work you will also build your reputation as a top of the line worker. If you have self promotional items available, make sure to hand them out. This way, you will be giving them reminders of who you are and what you do. Make sure that the business cards you make are professional looking, and perhaps memorable too. Your name may be on the lips of everyone if you make the right impression.

10 Things to Do When a Customer Rejects Your Work

How to Handle Getting Rejected or Fired by a Client WHen You are a freelancer

10 Things to Do When a Customer Rejects Your Work

Having a client tell you that he doesn’t like your work can break your heart in two. Not only can it affect your confidence, but it can also affect the way that you work on future projects. When a customer tells you the words that you don’t want to hear, you have to try to pull yourself together and put a new perspective on the situation. There are many reasons why the customer might not like your work. Maybe it is something specific that he doesn’t like, or maybe he doesn’t like it because of corporate red type sort of guidelines. If you don’t ask, you won’t know.

There are a few things that you should do to make sure that this situation ends in a positive fashion. Here are 10 things that you must consider if you are in a position where a customer doesn’t like the job that you are doing.

(1) Keep Calm and don’t raise your voice or act in a rude fashion towards the client.

(2) Don’t get over-defensive as you will end up sounding like a child.

(3) Don’t play the blame game. If you need to, politely mention that you weren’t given the proper instructions or information, etc.

(4) Ask the client specific questions to find out what he / she didn’t like about your work.

(5) Find out what you can do to make this situation right.

(6) If this is a first draft, then tell the client. Explain that first drafts are a way to get on the same page with each other and that it is natural not to love the first draft. Ensure the customer that the 2nd draft will be much better and much closer to the final product.

(7) Remember that this happens to everyone. This doesn’t mean that you stink at what you do.

(8) Don’t fall into a depression that leads to a career change. You are good at what you do. You know this. Don’t let one client’s opinion affect the rest of your life.

(9) Learn from your mistakes.

(10) Don’t end it badly with the customer. Make sure that you are professional because acting badly will just make things even worst.

Below you will find many articles online that I have found that will help you with even more advice. You will love some of the articles below.

When a Client Doesn’t Like Your Work - This article caters to situations when you’ve really done all you could…like when a client says “Just write my website…it’s about Topic A and you can research that on the Web,” or “I like pink and black, make a logo out of that.” It’s geared towards circumstances when the client says, “You’re the professional, I trust your judgment,” and doesn’t give you a lot to go on, despite all of your prodding for more information.

When Your Client Hates Your Work – The author had a bad experience with a customer who hated her work. Here’s what this experience taught her…you can learn from her challenged project.

How To Cope With Rejection As A Freelancer - Is there anything more rattling than those few seconds after clicking the “Send” button when submitting an article to a publication? Your heart skips a beat. You briefly live out a nightmare where you envision the editor screaming to himself, “What the hell is this? Is this guy serious? Stop wasting my time!”

Tips for Freelance Writers: How to Handle a Dissatisfied Client - Unfortunately, you can’t always spot them before you spend thirty hours writing something that they’ve requested.

Handling Client-Designer Breakups - Breakups happen to the best client-designer matches. Client runs out of money, client finds someone cheaper, client switches businesses and just no longer needs a design guru. It’s inconvenient and ego-deflating, and but there are ways a freelance designer can come out of the situation more business savvy.

How to Turn an Angry Client into a Loyal Client with One Little Word - An angry client is an opportunity for the smart freelancer. It’s like getting struck by lightening. Don’t panic! You’re human and there’s no way to be totally calm when a client is angry. But you need to keep your head clear. How? By remembering one word: ANGER.

Facing Rejection - Facing rejection can be a bit hard at time. But it does happen no matter where we are and what we do. We will some how face this kind of rejection and we must not forget to learn from it. No no, this rejection that i faced recently wasn’t from any girl, but its from a client.

Handling Client Complaints - As we know, most businesses fail. Don’t do what they do; do something different. The impact that dissatisfied clients can have on your business can be devastating. You need to seek out and deal with every dissatisfied client.

Managing Client Expectations - The following tips should help to alleviate some of this stress, and help to strengthen your reputation as a rock-solid professional.

Fix it if its Broke - So, can this relationship be saved? Indeed, it can. And as the company owner whose a$$ is on the line, you better get started ASAP.

Handling Rejection - Part of any home business is knowing how to handle rejection. Oftentimes, we as business people take rejection personally. Instead, we need to recognize that rejection usually means that it is not the right time for the potential customer. Of course, our attitude, demeanor, and appearance can attract or repel people. But ultimately, rejection is simply a way of someone saying “it’s not the right time.”

How to Think Like a Client - Clients are evil… at least it can feel that way sometimes. They seem to hinder more than help and so often they “just don’t get it”. We can talk enthusiastically about accessibility, standards and best practice but so often we are met with the blank stare of indifference from clients.

Web Design: Managing a Client’s Expectations - Web design can be frustrating without content. Starting a site’s design before the content for that site is fully developed can be a costly mistake. It often leads to designs that are sub par or that don’t fit with the final content. Knowing that is only half of the battle. The other battle is helping clients understand that, which is where this post comes into play.

5 Steps to Improved Client Feedback - From my experience these clients can be a bit more difficult to work with, not because they are hard to please or unreasonable in their expectations, but simply because they don’t always understand how much of an impact they need to have on the process. They hire a designer to create the site and they just assume that the designer can do what is needed.

What to Do When A Customer Wants to Fire You - So, one of your long-established clients calls up and says she’s been told by another business partner that your prices are too high. She wants to meet soon to discuss the future of the relationship. Here’s how to regain your composure and prepare for the meeting to come.

A Freelance Writer’s Blueprint for Handling Rejection - How should a freelance writer deal with rejection? Here is my own personal blueprint for handling rejection.

After Rejection - The Next Step in Freelance Writing - The First Rejection of Your Writing is a Badge of Courage. I’ve said that getting your first rejection is the first step in building a successful freelance writing career. And it’s true; it’s also true that what you do after your first writing rejection is critically important.

Turning Rejection into Success - If turning photography into income has a downside, it’s this: it doesn’t always work. You’ll pitch for jobs you won’t get, enter competitions you won’t win and submit images to stock companies who will send them back encouraging you to try again.

Finding Work At Home Jobs

Finding Work at Home Jobs

Finding A Work At Home Job

There’s a lot of appeal to working from home but many people who want to get started in this method of employment have trouble actually finding a work at home job. The difficulty lies not in the fact that there aren’t plenty of work at home jobs available but rather in the fact that genuine, quality, money-earning work at home jobs are all mixed up with work at home scams. This makes finding a work at home job that’s legitimate a not-so-easy task for people who are just breaking in to the freelancing business. But don’t worry; once you learn the lingo and know the basics, finding a work at home job gets a lot easier!

The first thing you should learn about is how to avoid the major scams that target people who want to work from home. The basic rule to follow here is that if it’s “too good to be true”, then it’s probably, quite simply, too good to be true. Work at home jobs are not easy jobs that are going to make you rich quick so if you’re finding a lot of work at home jobs that are advertised as such, you’re looking in the wrong places.

Okay, but you’re smart enough to know that. So where should you look to avoid the scams? Your best bet is to put in the time necessary to look locally as well as to look at a broader geographical region but with an eye towards your particular skill set niche. In other words, you don’t just want to type “work at home jobs” into a search engine and see what comes up because these jobs aren’t going to be specific to your area or to your skills.

Figure out what skills you can offer to an employer who will allow you to work from home. As offsite jobs and freelancing become increasingly popular, many employers are happy to work with you in this way. So, determine what it is that you can do from home, create a resume that reflects that and begin the job search just like you would fro an on-site job. Look at your local classified jobs listings for positions which apply to you ad keep your eye out for telecommute options. If you find a job that sounds good for you but doesn’t say whether or not telecommuting is okay; remember that it doesn’t hurt to ask.

As you determine what your freelancing niche is, you can also look outside of your geographic region to job websites which offer the kind of work that you’re seeking to do. For example, if you are a freelance writer specializing in crafting resumes, you can begin looking at the various different bid sites and job boards that are available for finding a work at home job that falls into this specific category. By narrowing down your search, you put yourself at less risk for being taking advantage of by online scams. As long as you approach the job search with a cautious eye (but a positive attitude!), you should find that finding a work at home job isn’t as daunting of a task as it may seem at first glance.

Pricing and Positioning Amongst Other Freelancers

Pricing and Positioning Amongst Other Freelancers

Pricing and Positioning Amongst Others

When running a business, there will be many factors you will have to consider on a daily basis. One such concern which needs to be addressed from time to time relates to pricing and positioning amongst others. Since there are often a great deal of competitors on the consumer market in a variety of business fields, it is important to ensure that your prices and offerings are fair when compared with others yet still fair enough to yourself as a business owner. There are a few factors you should consider when contemplating pricing and positioning amongst others.

Price Your Services According to Your Level of Expertise

Price Your Freelancer Services According to Your Level of Expertise

No matter what job field you are involved in it is always a good idea to price your services based on your level of expertise. Those who are more well versed in a particular area of business can get away with charging more for their services. Therefore, when pricing your services and determining your positioning amongst others be sure to consider your expertise level when doing so. Although your prices may be a bit higher than other businesses it may be due to your higher level of expertise in the field.

Make Your Prices Fair

Fair Prices

Regardless of what other businesses in the local area are charging, you must ensure that the prices you choose are fair in nature. A business who charges a fair price is sure to rank higher amongst competitors in the eyes of local consumers. Choosing a fair price for services can be dependent on level of expertise, services offered and added benefits which you include with the total cost of your business offerings.

Consider the Size of Your Business

How Big is the size of your business

When contemplating pricing and positioning amongst others, make sure that the size of your business is factored into the equation. For example, if you find that your rates differ from competitors in the area, this may be due to the fact that you are either a larger or a smaller business than your competitor is. Therefore, when considering pricing and positioning amongst others take note of how big the other businesses are with regard to customer base, number of employees and amount of business locations.
